Once upon a time..
There were these two sisters...
When giants roamed the world...
When you hear these words, you know to settle in and get ready to hear a story. Bards were professional story tellers, poets, and musician who crafted epic tales to entertain people in the days before movies, TVs, radios, and even the written word. Though there are usually variations in the telling, we expect canonical stories, like Cinderella, to stick to the expected form and ending. Disney takes liberties with with these stories, of course, to sanitize what might have been a gruesome original. Authors such as Gregory McGuire show that it's okay to turn stories on their heads like telling the Cinderella story with Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. One thing I enjoy about Visual Novels is their ability to let the reader drive the story through their choices which may result in vastly different endings. Animation technology improvements make it possible for small, independent story tellers to create engaging Visual Novels/Games which allow people shape their own stories and thus become their own bards. Together, we can craft a story about a summer at the beach.
